Fiona Stirling – Doctoral Studies at Manchester Met

Fiona Stirling is an artist, mother and educator. Alongside her praxis and caring for her family, she is the Programme Leader of the BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting degree at University Centre St Helens.

Since beginning her PhD, she has been researching the impact of time and space on the paintings of contemporary mid-life women artists. Fiona has developed the terms 'ad-hoc' and 'in-betweener painting' to describe her methodology of making between motherhood and employment responsibilities.

She investigates this theme by making paintings and exploring the work of others that intersect with her practice. Fiona has exhibited nationally and internationally. Most recently, she has shown at The Chapel, Ormskirk, as part of a group painting exhibition.

She is part of the Refractive Liverpool project, which explores contemporary painting in Liverpool. Her work is published in the Refractive Liverpool Book, which contains the portraits, thoughts, and words of 38 artists based in and around the city. This year, she will continue to develop her PhD research through writing and making and aims to exhibit a collection of her work as part of this process.
