Jemma Lakmaker – Doctoral Studies at Manchester Met

Jemma is doing a history PhD researching the social integration of ex-servicemen with military-induced hearing loss post-1914. The PhD is being funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP). Jemma’s undergraduate thesis looked at the history of sign languages, and for her master’s thesis she argued why it is important to incorporate disability history into the national curriculum. Jemma is currently undertaking an internship in the Civil Service working for the Department of Education. She works part time at Manchester Deaf Centre and is proficient in British Sign Language. Jemma is also a trustee for the charity Speaking Out Forum, empowering disabled people, people with learning difficulties, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds to have an equal voice in society.
