In his blog, Everton shares his experience attending the 9th International XR-Metaverse Conference in Busan, South Korea.

Introduction

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the 9th International XR-Metaverse Conference in Busan, South Korea. This three-day event brought together some of the brightest minds in the fields of extended reality (XR) and the metaverse, offering a unique chance to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and explore the future of these emerging technologies.

Day 1: A Glimpse into the Future

The conference kicked off with a high level of excitement, as attendees from all over the world gathered to share their research and insights. It was awe-inspiring to be in the presence of so many like-minded individuals (both new and esteemed) each a leader in their respective area of study. The presentations were diverse, covering everything from the technological advancements in XR to how these technologies are shaping various industries.

Among the many notable speakers were my supervisors, highly respected figures in the XR community. Their presentation garnered considerable attention, highlighting their involvement in ground-breaking research and innovative approaches. It was evident that they commanded immense respect from the audience, which further reinforced how fortunate I am to work under their guidance.

Day 2: Hands-On with XR Technolog

The second day of the conference was perhaps my favourite, as it was filled with hands-on experiences and interactive demonstrations. I had the chance to try out a variety of XR technologies, many of which are still in the developmental phase. These technologies ranged from virtual reality (VR) simulations designed for healthcare training to augmented reality (AR) applications that enhance Automotive use.

One of the most interesting aspects of the conference was my own opportunity to present. Standing before an international audience of academics and industry professionals was both exhilarating and daunting, but it provided me with an invaluable experience of presenting my research. Engaging in discussions with peers from various countries allowed me to gain new perspectives on the work being done in the XR space, and it was especially rewarding to receive feedback and encouragement from experts in the field.

The experience gave me a much deeper understanding of where the XR and metaverse industries are heading. It’s clear that this is more than just an emerging trend; it’s a new industrial revolution that is being shaped by global innovation. One of the key takeaways was how different cultures are influencing the growth of the industry and the development of these key technologies. From the way XR is being used in industrial environments in Asia to its impact on Health technologies in the UK, the cultural differences are fostering a diverse and dynamic future for the field.

Day 3: Building Connections and Collaborations

The final day of the conference was focused on networking and collaboration. I had the chance to connect with academics and industry professionals from around the globe, many of whom I had only previously known through their research papers. These connections were incredibly valuable, not only for exchanging ideas but also for potential future collaborations. The atmosphere was one of mutual respect and curiosity, with everyone eager to learn from one another.

I left the conference with some keen insights and a LinkedIn contact list full of brilliant individuals. The event underscored the importance of international collaboration in pushing the boundaries of XR and the metaverse, and I’m excited to see how these relationships will evolve over time.

 Exploring Busan: A Cultural Adventure

While the conference was the main focus of my trip, I made sure to take some time to explore the parts of Busan. This vibrant city, with its fantastically connected public WIFI, offered an incredible way explore the city whilst taking in the array of experiences. The food, in particular, was a major highlight, with each meal being a sensory adventure. From fresh seafood dishes to traditional Korean barbecue and curries, the flavours were absolutely unforgettable.

The people of Busan were warm and welcoming, always willing to help when I wasn’t sure where to go. Whether I was wandering past the sandy beaches or making my way to one of the conference sites, the kindness and hospitality of the locals made the experience even more special.

Final Thoughts

Attending the 9th International XR-Metaverse Conference in Busan was a truly unforgettable experience. It not only provided me with valuable professional insights but also allowed me to immerse myself in a new culture. The knowledge I gained about the future of XR and the metaverse, coupled with the connections I made, will undoubtedly shape my work moving forward. And, of course, the memories of exploring Busan and enjoying its incredible food will stay with me for a lifetime.

This experience reinforced my passion for XR and gave me a renewed sense of purpose in contributing to this rapidly evolving field. Busan, and the conference itself, will always hold a special place in my heart as a milestone in both my personal and professional journey.
