As a current doctoral student, attending the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2024 was extremely helpful to me as this allowed the opportunity for scientists, researchers and experts from around the world to discuss the latest advancements in microbiology in Edinburgh. The conference featured a diverse range of scientific symposia, workshops and professional development sessions. As someone researching submerged biofilm formation, I was particularly excited about the sessions that delved into this topic, especially the session on ‘Biofilm Antimicrobial Resistance’. Given the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance, this session was both timely and informative. Researchers presented novel approaches to combat biofilm-associated infections, emphasising the need for interdisciplinary collaboration. As I listened to their findings, I felt inspired to contribute to this critical area of study.
I also had the chance to present my current research as a poster and allowed discussion and advice from other attendees on how to improve it. Attending the conference wouldn’t have been possible without the Doctoral Conference Support Award. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity, which allowed me to immerse myself in the latest microbiological research. The award contributed towards my registration fees, travel expenses and accommodation, easing the financial burden on a budding researcher like me. Beyond the formal sessions, the conference provided ample networking opportunities. I connected with fellow doctoral students, established researchers and industry professionals. These interactions sparked new ideas, collaborations and friendships. Whether during coffee breaks or poster sessions, I found myself engaged in stimulating discussions about biofilm research and its applications.
